Godwin Franco

Godwin Franco is a Roman Catholic Indian international footballer who has represented the Indian Olympic Association. Godwin is a midfielder. He played for Chenaiyin FC winning the 2015 Indian Super League. In the season prior to that which was the 1st edition of the Indian Super League he played for Kerala Blasters FC finishing runner up. He is a winner of 14 trophies with various clubs in 13 seasons of professional football so far, including the Indian Super League, I-League and Indian Super Cup, making him one of the most successful footballers to have played in India of all time .

Early career

Godwin Franco comes from the village of Guirim, Goa and is a product of the Sesa Football Academy and prior to enrolling at Sesa, he has been with the Assagao Anjuna Football Academy. He was a part of the Vasco SC U-19 team in the then U-19 NFL and played for Churchill Bros U-19 in the then U-19 NFL.

Churchill Brothers

He started his professional career in 2003 with Churchill Brothers with whom he played for two seasons, winning the Goa Governors Cup with them. He played for them in the NFL, the then top tier football league of India. He played for them in the Indian Federation Cup.

Fransa Pax

Godwin signed for Fransa-Pax from June 1, 2006 for one season. He played for them in the NFL, the then top tier football league of India. He played for them in the Indian Federation Cup.

Sporting Clube de Goa

Godwin signed for Sporting Goa from June 1, 2006 for three seasons, winning the Goa Professional League and G.F.A. Charity Cup with them. He played for them in the NFL, the then top tier football league of India. He played for them in the Indian Federation Cup.


In 2009 Godwin joined Pune who had just gained promotion to the I-League and helped them finish 3rd in their debut season at the top level of Indian football, starting 23 times in the midfield. He played for them in the Indian Federation Cup.


In 2010, Godwin joined Dempo, staying with them for 4 seasons. He won 9 trophies with Dempo including the I-League and the Indian Super Cup. He finished runner up in the 2012Indian Federation Cup with Dempo, in which he made an assist for a goal in the final. He played for Dempo S.C. in the 2011 AFC Champions League qualifier vs Al Sadd, Qatar who eventually became the AFC Champions League winners that season and then they were bronze medalist (3rd place) at the 2011 FIFA World Club Cup. He played in the AFC Cup for Dempo S.C. as well. Godwin started in the match for Dempo which created an all-time record for the highest goals scored by a team in a single match in any of the top tier Indian league football matches, with a 14-0 home win in the I-League and completed his part in that match with a 100% pass ratio.

Fortuna Dusseldorf

During his time at Dempo Godwin was selected by former German Bundesliga champions Fortuna Düsseldorf, Germany, for a trial in November 2013, along with Nirmal Chhetri .

Kerala Blasters FC

On 22 July 2014, Godwin joined Kerala Blasters FC franchise for the newly formed Indian Super League for a one-year contract. He finished 2nd place with Kerala Blasters FC in the 1st Indian Super League. He went on loan after the Indian Super League to Royal Wahingdoh FC for the 2015 I League.

Royal Wahingdoh FC

Godwin joined Royal Wahingdoh FC on loan from Kerala Blasters FC after the Indian Super League, in February 2015 after the first five matches of Royal Wahingdoh FC in the I League and started every match playing an important role, including scoring two long range goals vs East Bengal FC and Bengaluru FC , in helping Royal Wahingdoh finish 3rd in their debut season in the I League.

Chenaiyin FC

Godwin signed for Chenaiyin Fc for the 2nd Indian Super League during the open transfer period on May 15, 2015 for a one-year contract. He helped Chenaiyin Fc win the 2015 Indian Super League . He won the 2015 Indian Super League final in his home state Goa. Godwin also played for Chenaiyin FC in the 14th Sergio Minelli Memorial Trophy vs Italian club Gualdo Casacastalda in Italy.

International career

Godwin played for a Indian Under-19 team in 2003. Godwin played for the India football team in the 2006 Lusophony Games in Macau representing the Indian Olympic Association . Godwin was also a part of the India national football team camp for the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. He however could not play the tournament because of late player registration. Godwin was selected as a probable for the India national football team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Godwin is a part of the Indian national football team system for the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers. Godwin played for the Goa state team vs Zambia in an invitational match in Goa . Zambia following became The African Cup of Nations Champions.

National career

Godwin has played for the U-16, U-19 and U-21 Goa football teams at those respective National Championships for his state Goa and captained Goa at the U-21 level. Godwin played for the Goa Santosh Trophy team, who were semi finalist of the Santosh Trophy in Kolkata. Godwin played for the Goa state team vs Zambia in an invitational match in Goa . Zambia following became The African Cup of Nations Champions.

On the 12th of October 2015 Godwin signed a 2-year sponsorship deal with Puma. On February 13, 2017 Godwin got a sponsorship deal with Fast and Up India, a Swiss intelligent sports nutrition company.

Television Work

Godwin has spoken for Times Now from Germany during the 2012 UEFA European Championship. Godwin has also spoken for Times Now from Germany for their TV show on the day of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final. He has also been an analyst on T.V. shows during the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup’s.
